HIMMEL’S CHURCH QUILTERS
The first quilt the Himmel’s Church Women quilted was at the home of Jennie Kehres during the year 1932 which was presented to the Minister and his family who was serving Himmel’s at the time. Members paid 10 cents to have their name embroidered on the quilt which was sewed by Hellen Reed. Later on the quilt was donated to the Historical Society of Northumberland County.
After the fire destroyed the third Himmel’s Lutheran and Reformed Church in 1959 and the former church was built the women started quilting to raise money for the building fund. The first years it was a winter sport and as they received more work it kept them busy all year round, and are still quilting 42 years later, the proceeds still going to the building fund. Over the past years two quilts were exhibited at the Gratz Fair and won 2 blue ribbons.
In 1986 a quilt was designed by the Carl Kahler family of the church that was destroyed by fire and sold for $2,000.00 which is one of a kind. One quilt is quilted every year which is sold at the October Church Bazaar Fair. The proceeds also going to the building fund.
A quilt has been presented to the Ministers who celebrated their 25th year of Ordination, plus donated 2 to the Camp Mt. Luther Fund. Once a year the quilters treat themselves to a home cooked meal.
It is not just a working project but is also therapy and fellowship being with church family and neighboring church members.
