HIMMEL’S CHURCH VIA-DE-CRISTO

What does the phrase mean? Via-de-Cristo is Spanish for “Way of Christ”. It refers to a short course in Christian living.

How did it originate? The movement began in Spain in the 1940’s and spread to other countries in 1953 and to the United States in 1957. Lutherans were introduced to the movement by the Roman Catholics in 1971. Organized groups such as Vineyard Via-de-Cristo, are now found in most Protestant denominations, including Lutherans, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Methodist. Individuals from other main line churches also participate. The Vineyard Via-de-Cristo is ecumenical with a Lutheran base.

What is the purpose of such a group? The purpose of a Via-de-Cristo weekend is to build Christian leaders by helping active Christians renew and strengthen their faith, knowledge and love of Christ. Via-de-Cristo presents a simple method of small group sharing through which one’s grace-filled life may be lived and shared with others.

What happens on a weekend? The weekend begins on Thursday night and closes late Sunday afternoon. A team of Clergy and lay persons present 15 short talks, on topics of Grace, Christian living and the Church. There are opportunities for discussion, reflection, prayer, sharing, spiritual counseling, communion, singing and fun while living in a Christian community.

Himmel’s has had some 50 plus persons experience such a wonderful grace filled weekend.
